The Rock Cabins: relaunching rural tourism in Hungary

One of the challenges that Hungary must face is countering the emptying of rural villages due to an aging population and lack of employment opportunities for young people. By transforming the original architectural project, the residential modules of The Rock Cabins aim to be an attractive element to revive tourism in a hidden corner of the Balaton Uplands.

Architecture in service of the community

Hello Wood, a design studio with numerous architectural projects aimed at contributing to local communities through structures and spaces that requalify the territory, within its educational program dedicated to architecture and nature, acquired a 2-hectare plot of land in the enchanting Balaton Uplands. This was the site of the international summer school and the Hello Wood festival during which a temporary village was built by architecture students. Subsequently, the studio sought a new function for the village with the aim of contributing to the revitalization of the area: thus, The Rock Cabins idea was born.

Architecture merging with the territory

Hidden in the grove, 6 unique cabins and a reception building have been designed and built: six buildings that reflect the magic of the ancient settlement surrounded by farmland and blend perfectly with nature. The monolithic character of the cabins, evoking giant runic stones, is enhanced by the building masses that only open onto the terrace and entrance: the homogeneous and sculptural wooden form is uninterrupted by windows, doors, or stairs.

Shape of a Stone to Immerse in Nature

Irregular planes and vertices define a shape reminiscent of a polished stone, made even more distinctive by the paneling, its unique hue, and metallic sheen. In contrast to the grey shell, the golden brown of the terrace and interior reveals itself like the inside of a cracked geode. The Rock Cabins offer a comfortable and welcoming space for two people

Inside The Rock Cabins

The 21+15 square meter cabins feature a living room with bed, kitchen furniture, wall wardrobe and dining table, a bathroom with double shower, and a panoramic infrared sauna. To give it a spa touch, a large whirlpool tub is incorporated into the spacious covered terrace, separated only by a glass window from the sauna which is directly accessible from the shower. To ensure an intimate and carefree experience, the cabins overlook the fields and gentle surrounding hills.
