An 140 square meter house built on a lot of only 220 square meters, in the Sunset Terrace area of Laguna Beach, California. The compression of the available space to build the villa creates a swirling void around which the building is developed
The vortex open towards the sky
Martin Fenlon Architecture studio designs the villa at Sunset Terrace as an architectural organism where the outdoor space enters and exits the house through an oculus open towards the sky. This curvilinear void characterizes and distributes the entire living space
The internal distribution of the villa
On the ground floor, the house features a living room with a kitchen and a garage, while on the upper floor there is the sleeping area with the master bedroom, equipped with a walk-in closet, bathroom, and exclusive terrace, and two other bedrooms with a shared bathroom. The vortex-like space breaks into the simple box-like composition of the villa, creating a well of light in which a spiral staircase connects the two floors
The finishes emphasize the architectural play
The building is made interesting by the differentiated use of finishing materials on the facades that emphasizes the architectural play created around the vortex. The ground floor, completely glazed on the living room side, is plastered white on the sides and on the rear where the large garage door, also white, is inserted. The entire upper floor and the surfaces resulting from the subtraction of the circular volume are covered in wood. The glass railing allows for maximum enjoyment of the play of finishes
