Villa Pudong a model of a country house for contemporary China

In the countryside around Shanghai, Villa Pudong is being built to replace the old house to accommodate three generations of the owning family. An opportunity to spend holidays together, in nature, and to design a new model of country house for contemporary China

Union between modern lifestyle and oriental atmospheres and nature

It is in the spirit of Atelier LI to create architectural projects that combine the lifestyle of today with oriental atmospheres and the natural environment. Thus, in Villa Pudong, there are three fundamental design principles. Firstly, the "greenery" that already surrounds the house is intertwined with the architecture through internal courtyards at all levels of the building, including the concept of a traditional oriental garden

Green, convivial space, and contemporary architectural language are the pillars of the project

Convivial space is another focus of the project: the house is designed to host the family's holiday and relaxation moments, which, being welcomed in spacious and comfortable environments, can collect new memories of harmonious moments. The third design principle consists of maintaining a contemporary architectural language despite the rural context; this allows the local inhabitants to become familiar with the new forms of living and how these can coexist with nature and tradition

Dynamic concert of volumes oxygenated by internal courtyards at various levels

The white and modern Villa Pudong complies with regulations by matching the volume of the pre-existing house. Despite the dimensional constraints, the architects manage to create a dynamic concert of volumes, oxygenated by internal courtyards at various levels. Inside, a tranquil and luminous atmosphere interacts with the extroverted main volume; one section of the house has two levels, another has three, and the space sacrificed for the internal patios is recovered by the large cantilevered volume towards the west with a 3.5 meter overhang

Guide for local workers on the use of modern construction techniques

For the construction of the villa, the architects guide the local workers in the use of modern construction techniques that combine steel, concrete, and bricks. Once completed, Villa Pudong observes the coexistence of different lifestyles of its inhabitants: the grandparents, who continue the traditional life of farmers and poultry breeders, alongside the children who bring urbanity and contemporaneity, "enjoying the view of the internal gardens while sipping a cup of coffee."
