Villa SG21 is as elegant and simple as the colour suggests. The site required a design that would fit the local building code with sloping roofs but however, the owners wanted a minimalist and clean design that would stand out among other more conventional structures along the way. The area is located in a protected area consisting mostly of meadows and farmland. In total, it measured about 100 x 50 metres and the house is located at an extreme end

On the outside, black defines the geometry of the house, not contrasting with its surroundings but conveying an idea of overbearing minimalism. This is how FilliéVerhoeven Architecten Studio reinterprets the building typology of the area in a modernist and elegant key
A fundamental element of the project is the roof, made from an imported turf. The grass is delivered to the site in net bags positioned directly on the roof surface. This mixture is already mixed with seeds from different types of grass. Over the years, the roots of the soil will grow and provide a green carpet
The house also has a large sliding door made of wood and glass at the entrance that shades the entrance door. The door measures approximately 10 x 3 metres and has only two panels each weighing over 500 kilos. Apart from the front and rear areas, all other openings are windows and sliding doors with minimum frame sizes that give the house its minimalist appearance, both inside and out
The house has no visible columns and the imposing 8-inch cross laminated wooden roof is supported by load-bearing walls. This creates an even more minimalist interior. This minimalism is emphasized by the sliding door, which has a sliding mechanism hidden behind the black wooden panels. Thus the minimalist and elaborate details, combined with the sturdy shape of a barn, give the design elegance and modesty
