Restaurant, discotheque, sports ground in Hangzhou: the YMCA has always been a landmark for the city's young trendsetters. The retro architecture and dynamic personality, the contrast and contradiction create a sense of "interest" in the whole design, and Fununit Design studio decided to design a new look for the building, one which would not be standard
A new look for the old YMCA Hotel: a design in the name of surprise and humor
The Hangzhou YMCA, built in 1918, is the location for the YMCA Hotel project, an old Western-style building which Fununit Design is renovating in a playful way, while often leaving historical details intact at the back
The lobby area retains its historical details intact. The old glass door, with its black frame, creates a transition into an environment with a futuristic, metallic and grey-green character. A golden bar and neon lights characterise the space
The green corridor and orange handrails invite you to enter another world, made up of rituals. The used colours are the result of studies and they lead the guests to feel a sense of good mood. Each space seeks a strong system of colours, studying a precise combination that aims for balance or to bring out more interesting spatial levels
The smells, as well as the colours, contribute to the creation of an intense nostalgic atmosphere. Modern design clashes with new harmonies, creating new interactions and energies. The Artdeco style of the old building's era is incorporated into the design, geometric elements blend in, a new retro space is created, distinguished by a sense of humour
