Saint-Gobain Italy for the new university campus of Valle d'Aosta

The project by studio mca - mario cucinella architects, winner of a public competition held in 2010, stands out for its innovative and highly recognizable architectural language, capable of interacting with the important historical pre-existing structures, the original floor plan layout, and the spectacular surrounding natural context.

Educational Functionality and Interior Spaces

The interior spaces are designed with the aim of ensuring maximum organization for the various educational functions, ensuring a close relationship with the main square of the campus that serves as a new urban space, permeable and inclusive. The classrooms and study areas directly face the surrounding mountains, while the communal areas and pathways interact with the external square through a sophisticated facade system with a sinuous and curvilinear design.

Saint-Gobain solutions under the Isover and Gyproc brands

The design request called for the use of dry perimeter closures, high-performance internal walls in terms of fire resistance and flexibility of use, technical counter-walls, and acoustically high-performance false ceilings. To meet this need, Saint-Gobain Italy employed its own dry, lightweight, and high-performance systems, ideal for use in contemporary architectural projects because they can ensure flexibility of use, sound insulation, and high fire resistance properties.

Facade and visual impact

The proposed dry stratifications combine highly insulating Isover PAR 4+ panels with standard Gyproc Wallboard sheets, Gyproc Hydro waterproof sheets, Gyproc Vapor sheets acting as a vapor barrier, Gyproc Flex 6 sheets for curved applications, high-strength Gyproc DuraGyp Activ’Air® special sheets, and fire-resistant Gyproc Fireline and Gyproc Lisaplac sheets. In some parts of the facade, special Gyproc Glasroc®X fibreglass-reinforced gypsum sheets, designed for exterior use, ensure maximum flexibility and resistance to moisture and weather conditions.

Acoustic Systems and Air Quality

For internal acoustic ceilings, installation of the Gyproc Rigitone® Edge 8-18 Activ’Air® system, which utilizes specially perforated panels to ensure high levels of acoustic performance and a visually impactful aesthetic result. The perforated panels are characterized by a sound-absorbing fabric with dust-proof function applied on the back and by the exclusive Activ’Air® technology, which ensures an improvement in air quality by absorbing and neutralizing formaldehyde present in indoor environments.
