Majestic wooden building on the Columbia River. Workspace, retailing and recreational activities

Outpost is a facility located in Hood River, along the Columbia River and designed by Skylab Architecture studio to strengthen the communal feeling of a small and developing US town and its connection to the waterfront

The first construction phase of a masterplan covering approximately 18,000 square metres involves two buildings of 9,000 square metres, which function as one large structure with a large central open area shared by both buildings

The two buildings are also unified through an external aesthetic: a combination of naturally processed cedar on the ground floor and charred cedar cladding on the two upper floors

While the ground floor supports light industrial activities, the upper floors houses commercial, co-working, office and leisure spaces. The structure consists of locally manufactured glulam beams that are integrated with the infill walls

The large external windows are based on a traditional industrial proportion that illuminates the building's interior with natural light. The interiors are clad in wood and look very warm reminiscent of barns or mountain huts
