The Urban Conga, in the Ripple Installation project, involved the community through a series of design workshops involving the landscape and local residents. The playful character of the installation involves passers-by stopping and interacting with each other. Ripple is a permanent public installation designed by The Urban Conga in Rochester, New York. A landmark designed for the community to break down social barriers and connect people through moments of outdoor play
The value of play incorporated into everyday spaces aims to make cities more social, healthy and inclusive. The design of Ripple is inspired by the Genesee River and its smooth movement: the installation mimics the rippling effects of the water, with its reflections and refractions of the surrounding environment, as if it were alive and constantly moving
Each part of the Ripple installation reflects the changing seasons and the surrounding context, creating new experiences each time. Each piece that makes up the structure contains 1200 units, which in turn contain a dichroic film that reflects and changes colour according to the angle at which the light hits the surface
