Civic Library in Lombardy. New function for the Antica Torre del Borgo

The Torre del Borgo is one of the most famous fortified buildings in Bergamo's history. The powerful and precise quality of the medieval walls, the integrity of the fortified structure, the central position in the village, gives this artifact the most complete sense of the monument

The restoration project has addressed several aspects that have affected the conservation, use and enhancement of the building: the structural instability of the walls and floors, the lack of an adequate system of connection between the floors, the total absence of plant networks, the degradation and precariousness of internal and external stone cladding, the lack of windows and adequate interior finishes, on the floors and walls

The entire work followed a dual purpose, on one hand by identifying solutions to the problems of degradation and on the other by offering an architectural and functional reinterpretation of the project. Designed to be built in two functional lots: with the completion of lot 1, the four rooms of the central tower and the spaces of the new building for services and distribution are fully accessible

An important intervention is certainly the insertion of the new system of ramps and walkways, entirely made with an iron structure, which is articulated between the spaces of the central tower and the new building, which connects the various levels of the complex

Lot 2 includes the redevelopment of the public space in Piazza del Borgo, with the creation of a large covered area, which interconnects with the new paving of the square. With the completion of the restoration project, the Torre del Borgo will be able to house the public library
