Gimbal City, the city in constant transformation

Each participant becomes a co-creator of urban scenarios through Gimbal City, promoting collaboration and creativity through physical interfaces exploring a shared urban landscape that is constantly evolving.

An Interactive Installation for Urban Creation

Gimbal City is an interactive installation created by iheartblob that invites participants to become co-creators of imaginary urban environments through physical interfaces. Commissioned by V&A Dundee for the exhibition Photo City: How Images Shape the Urban World, the work emphasizes collaboration and creativity, combining the innovative approach of design projects by iheartblob. Players can thus shape a dynamic and ever-evolving urban landscape in real-time.

Three stations for a tactile experience

The installation features three distinct stations, each equipped with tactile controls such as knobs, buttons, and wheels. These tools allow participants to select buildings, landscapes, colors, and materials. Each player contributes their unique vision, which seamlessly updates on the screens of all participants, creating a collectively evolving urban environment. Every day the city is reset, offering visitors a new opportunity for creative exploration.

Asynchronous Collaboration and Collective Creativity

Gimbal City promotes asynchronous collaboration, allowing participants to interact with the installation at their own pace while influencing the shared urban landscape in real time. This approach fosters a collective and evolving vision of the city, reflecting the perspectives of many rather than a single designer. Drawing inspiration from video game mechanics, Gimbal City breaks down professional boundaries, enabling anyone to take on the role of an architect and contribute to the city's future vision through play.

A local collaboration and support project

The project was partially funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, allocated by the Dundee City Council. The implementation was managed by Old School Fabrications, with audio and video design by Troy Nelson and hardware support by Andy Shepherd.
