The restructuring intervention has preserved the original architectural features, such as the use of Klinker for the shutters and the rigorous geometry, reinterpreting them in a contemporary way to enhance integration with the landscape and improve the functionality of indoor and outdoor spaces.

Set against the backdrop of the Mincio Park

The single-family villa Casa SCR built between 1964 and 1965, is located in Mantua, within the charming natural setting of the Mincio Park, with a privileged view of the Upper Lake. The original architecture was characterized by three distinct geometric volumes: a rectangular base, a larger main volume, and a projecting roof, which was configured as a suspended slab with large openings at the entrances.

Distinctive elements of the original architecture

One of the distinctive elements of the building was the use of Klinker as a sunshade on the main volume, framed by a strict white plastered rectangle. This combination of geometric form and specific material defined the identity of the architecture.

Objective of the restructuring intervention

The objective of the intervention, by architect Nicola Salami, was to conceive a house renovation before and after preserving and enhancing distinctive elements, reintroducing them in areas where the original project showed less evident architectural quality. Originally, the Klinker jealousy extended on the east and west sides up to the entrances, abruptly stopping, giving the impression of an unfinished project. The new intervention filled these gaps, specularly proposing on the north side the same spyglass structure of the south facade. This highlighted the suspended roof slab and framed the light Klinker jealousies, thus completing the original project.

Southern Exposure and Sun Protection

On the southern exposure, the blinds have been kept, acting as a curtain that protects the interior spaces from sunlight and ensures privacy in the sleeping area, while allowing the passage of light.

Rethinking the Pool

The pool, originally organic, has been redesigned into a rectangular shape that mirrors the dimensions of the front of the villa. It has been constructed at ground level and covered with a gray lake material, for a harmonious integration with the surrounding environment. The existing dock has been restored and, with the addition of a thermally treated ash deck, the flat roof has been transformed into a sunbathing area by the water.

Design of Outdoor Spaces and Greenery

Even the outdoor spaces and greenery have been carefully designed to decorate, mitigate, and protect the privacy of the residence. Internally, on the raised floor, the main apartment is located, while on the basement floor, there are recreational, sports, and service rooms.

Redistribution of Interior Spaces

The redistribution of spaces on the upper floor has created a clear separation between the living area and the sleeping area. The living area, with a large window facing the lake, is spacious and airy, with the kitchen integrated through full-height glass doors and a rotating fireplace as the focal point. The sleeping area accommodates three bedrooms with private bathrooms, ensuring independent and private spaces.

Contemporary Finishes and Materials

On the lower floor, a large glass window provides visual continuity between the interior, the pool, and the lake. The selected finishes aim to find a balance between materials and colors that respect the original architecture, while also declaring the contemporary nature of the intervention. The incorporation of new materials has been carefully executed, maintaining consistency with the existing structure.
