Renovated restaurant in Seattle. The Project extends to the Garden and the Open kitchen

By combining two small restaurants in Seattle, the SHED studio has created a single large room where the respective dining rooms are connected with each other and with the kitchen that is open to the view of the diners

The client of SHED studio purchased two small buildings that housed two restaurants, Le Gourmand and Sambar in Seattle respectively for a long time. The idea of the client was to connect the two dining rooms with each other and with the kitchen, but the two spaces were not connected with each other except through a narrow external corridor positioned right in the middle

After an accurate evaluation of the load-bearing structures of the two buildings, the problems related to opening a wide passage through two different types of masonry emerged again

The problem is solved on the one hand by replacing the wooden supporting wall with a new steel beam and on the other by adjusting the veneer and inserting a steel frame. This creates a wide opening that overlooks the external corridor

Underneath the steel frame, the various wall finishes are removed, giving way to the original wooden cladding, thus bringing all the building's existing layers to light

The large opening next to the three French windows overlooking the garden patio enables light to enter and illuminate all the rooms. The external corridor is arranged and nicely transformed into a new dining room outside

By removing some non-load-bearing walls, the kitchen opens up to the dining room, allowing diners to enjoy a view of the activities of the chef and his staff.
With pragmatism and creativity, the structural problems and the initial limits are solved transforming them into strong points thanks to the openings that make it possible to fully exploit the receptive potential of the outdoors
