Dazeen in 2016 published an article about Schols' pavilion that caught the attention of the public, who were enthusiastic about Garden House: somehow it had touched and cheered people's vision of living. Garden House was nominated for several awards including the Dirk Roosenburg Rijs (Eindhoven), Radical Innovation Awards (New York) and was long-listed for the Dezeen award for "small-building" of the year. Schols won a scholarship to begin training in architecture, which unlike his studies in physics, although he found them enjoyable, finally made him feel at home
A house for living anywhere in the world, a living outfit that you can change according to your personality: the ANNA cabin
The story of the ANNA cabin was already in the making, when its designer Caspar Schols, still without an academic background in architecture, designed a pavilion for his mother's garden, which could be modified according to the function it was intended for and depending on the weather conditions. A place where people could dine with friends, do painting and meditation and, on occasion, serve as a venue for their grandchildren's theatrical performances
And so the evolution of the Garden House, a "house-package", sold as a complete object that can be assembled and disassembled anywhere in the world, begins to take shape in Schols' mind. Thanks to investors and various prototypes, the final model of ANNA was created: a dynamic house, a platform with movable walls that opens up to the elements of nature, allowing people to really live in it, playing with the various configurations of its panels. ANNA is based on the concept of adaptability to internal and external conditions, just as we change the way we dress according to the weather, situations and personal moods
There are three models of the living module: ANNA Stay, ANNA Meet and ANNA Me.
ANNA Stay has two sliding shells and a fixed part; this houses the kitchen, shower, toilet and a pantry. Above the kitchen is a mezzanine, large enough for a second king-size bed, allowing you to sleep up to four people in total. ANNA meet is instead conceived as an empty and multifunctional platform, to accommodate a wide range of activities (yoga, writing, meetings...), ANNA Me is finally a fully customisable version of ANNA
ANNA is made of sustainably grown, untreated larch; inside, it uses birch panels for their high quality and light colour, insulated from the outside with five centimetres of sawdust. The space is heated by a wood-burning stove, but there is the possibility of installing electric heating. The windows in the cabin's curtain wall are designed to let in natural light but not to heat the room too much, and to shelter it from the outside if desired: when the wooden shells are closed there is a warm, cosy atmosphere, protected from the elements, especially when the weather is hostile or you simply want to hide away from the world. A condition that contrasts sharply with the openness and freedom you experience when only the glass shell is closed or everything is open
The cabin can be delivered in one piece or as a 'flat-pack' consisting of 26 parts each weighing a maximum of 500 kg. The foundation is made up of 14 1.5 m long steel screw pillars, which are easy to remove: once the ANNA booth is moved elsewhere nothing is left in the wild. Using a mini electric crane, the elements are assembled in 5 days with the work of 3 people (and dismantled in 3 days). All elements fit on a normal truck and can be transported by land or sea.
