Spatial fluidity and rustic style blend together in Casa Mariela

In the heart of Granollers, Barcelona, a family breathes new life into an old inherited house, transforming it into Casa Mariela: a comfortable home, created with a budget strictly below €150,000, in the city center and close to work and the children's school

Creative essentiality that redesigns space

Casa Mariela came to life thanks to the project by Viva - Casas Sostenibles, a studio known for creating sustainable and innovative architectural projects. The limited budget influenced the design choices, leading to the elimination of internal walls and superfluous coverings. The narrow and long layout of the plot pushed the designers to envision the house as a network of interconnected spaces, devoid of corridors and doors. Essential services, such as bathrooms and the kitchen, were placed along the side walls, creating an open central space that redefines the perception of domestic environments.

Brick and wood textures with distinctive rustic charm

Left exposed and raw, brick walls allow for savings on plastering. Prefabricated wood panels, maintained with their natural finish, are used for the ceilings. Thus, the rugged charm of the brick and the warm tone of the wood become the distinctive textures that define the home's identity. To illuminate its heart, a double-height space has been created at the center which, culminating in a skylight, not only enhances natural light but also promotes optimal ventilation, maximizing the sustainability of the project.

Central space that unites and welcomes

The dining room, positioned in the center of the house, basks in the natural light filtering through the skylight of the double space, becoming the luminous focal point that connects the living area and the sleeping area. In the kitchen, the design has favored functionality and a convivial atmosphere: custom side furniture, with hidden handles and a design that integrates perfectly with the rustic and minimal style, free up the center of the space to welcome moments of family gathering and sharing.

Versatility and evolving spaces over time

The flexible approach of the design studio has allowed for the organization of two bedrooms and two bathrooms on the upper floor, connected by a wooden walkway overlooking the double-height space, emphasizing the visual continuity between the levels. The rooms, characterized by regular shapes and generous dimensions, are designed to offer remarkable versatility, being able to transform into a study, gym, or playroom, adapting to the future needs of the family and changing habits.
