Casa Mariela has come to life thanks to the project by Viva - Casas Sostenibles, which exploits minimalism. The limited budget mandated the absence of internal walls and claddings. The narrow and long floor plan forced the designers to envision the house as a network of interconnected spaces, devoid of corridors and doors. Essential services such as bathrooms and the kitchen are situated along the side walls, allowing for an open central space
Spatial fluidity, functionality, and style merged together to give life to Casa Mariela
In the heart of Granollers, Barcelona, a family breathes new life into an inherited old house, transforming it into Casa Mariela: a comfortable dwelling, created with a strict budget of less than €150,000, located in the city center and close to the workplace and the children’s school

Left in their raw state, the brick walls save on plastering costs. Prefabricated wooden panels, left with their natural finish, are used for the ceilings. Thus, the rustic charm of the brickwork and the natural tone of the wood become the textures that define the house. To illuminate its core, a double-height space is carved out in the center which, ending with a skylight, enhances brightness and fosters optimal ventilation
The dining room, located at the center of the house, basks in the light filtering through the skylight from the double-height space and serves as a connection between the living area and the sleeping area. In the kitchen, priority was given to functionality and enjoyment: custom side furniture with concealed handles, subtly blended into the home’s aesthetic, leave the center of the space available for the family’s convivial gatherings
The flexible approach of the design studio has allowed for accommodating two bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs, connected by a wooden walkway overlooking the double-height space. The regularly shaped rooms, with their generous dimensions, offer the flexibility to be transformed into a studio, gym, or playroom
