De Witt: a journey through time between cinema, food, and culture

In the heart of Dordrecht, on a lively square in front of the Kunstkerk, stands De Witt, once known as The Movies. This historic cinema has been transformed into a glamorous destination through the creative intervention of Studio Modijefsky. Today, De Witt is not just a place to watch movies, but also a sophisticated brasserie open all day, offering a culinary experience that combines flavors and visions in a suggestive and richly historical setting.

A project that evokes history

The building that houses De Witt has a fascinating history, having served as a convent, school, and laboratory before becoming a cinema. Studio Modijefsky has been able to integrate these historical layers into the design, creating a timeless visual language. The cloisters, nun's habits, and attire are referenced in the architectural and decorative elements. The tiles, classroom windows, and notice boards evoke the school era, while the chemistry sets and protective screens recall the period when the building was a laboratory.

The entrance and the brasserie

The main entrance welcomes visitors with an impressive glass facade from floor to ceiling, flooding the interior with natural light. Once inside, the ticket booth framed by light blue velvet curtains and illuminated by spotlights marks the beginning of a fascinating journey. The brasserie, completely renovated, extends over a single large space connected by clear sightlines that allow light to filter freely. The open kitchen, with a long vermilion bench, invites diners to observe the preparation of dishes, creating a convivial and welcoming atmosphere.

Details that tell stories

Every detail of the brasserie tells a story. The customized lights, inspired by chemical laboratories, combine with tiles and glass panels that evoke a school environment. The vintage benches and chairs, reimagined for the occasion, and the custom-made tables, crafted from fine woods, create a warm and refined atmosphere. The cloister arches, the window hood frames, and the alabaster lights all contribute to creating an intimate and evocative environment.

The heart of De Witt: the bar

At the center of the brasserie lies the bar, a tribute to cinema and performing arts. Designed like a theater tent, with sculpted waves in the wooden base and a zinc countertop, the bar is an elegant and lively gathering spot. Tiled columns and aged mirrors reflect the city's color palette, while wine glasses hanging beneath the tent evoke the costumes of dancers, adding a touch of magic and theatricality.

Elevated Spaces and Intimate Corners

Two parts of the brasserie have been elevated to offer breathtaking views from the tall windows, creating intimate and cozy areas. The checkerboard stone floors and custom vermilion benches with leather backrests make every corner of the brasserie a unique place to relax and enjoy a meal or a drink with company. The windows, with frames inspired by nun's veils, and alabaster lights create light and shadow play that changes throughout the day, adding depth and warmth to the environment.

An upper floor to discover

On the upper floor, two large cinema screens welcome the audience, while a lounge with a bar and ticket counter offers an elegant and comfortable relaxation area. The bar, with its wavy design and blue velvet curtains, is a perfect place to enjoy a cocktail before the movie, while the new balcony offers a lovely view of the wildflower garden. The multifunctional event hall, with velvet curtains and suspended lights, is ideal for hosting a variety of cultural events, from poetry readings to dance performances. One of the interior design projects that best combines conviviality and culture.
