The stones of Matera were recognized by UNESCO as a humanitarian heritage in 1993, but the history of Italy recounts that previously they had been abandoned to their degradation. This city dug behind the ravine has been inhabited since the Paleolithic, with various customs and vicissitudes that lead us to the past century. Cited by various important writers such as Dante Alighieri and Primo Levi, now, thanks to projects like this, it is reviving its splendor, so much so that by 2019 it will be the European capital of culture
The accommodation facility "Fra i Sassi" is located in Sasso Barisano in Matera and consists of several caverns that are developed in nine rooms, a reception area, breakfast room and a convivial kitchen available to all guests. The functional restoration of the building has always preserved the structure and volumes of all the original environments, enhancing the unique and suggestive forms
Great importance was given to the lighting design, developed to enhance the volumes of the building and the organic forms of the architecture. Each room is different from the other, both in the architecture and in the finishes and furnishings, the entire structure is divided by a path and an external terrace, designed as a distribution ring which acts as an interspersed area for rest and relaxation
The structure is a compact " entity " but each area is treated in a unique and particular way, designed from an inclusive perspective. The design of the distribution system and the rooms are designed working on the removal of sensory-perceptive barriers and trying to enhance the multisensory of the original architecture. The external distribution path is underlined by an olfactory tactile path, the analysis of the interior materials, the furnishings and the equipment of the rooms are designed and harmonized with the context in the perspective of the "Universal Design"
Architecture is the art that can enhance nature or can decide to subdue it, in this case, the operation was guided by the hand of the "earth", showing how if the two things go hand in hand, they can only create spectacular works
