Located near Beijing's Qianmen, the building is characterized by a quadrangular courtyard, characteristic of Republican houses. The structure is completely redesigned, starting from the same courtyard, which previously did not overlook doors or windows
Traditional architecture is redesigned. New and old between public and private
The traditional architecture, originally a commercial building of about 500 square meters, is renovated by the architectural studio ARCHSTUDIO, which transforms the building into a complex for public and private activities
This traditional space, the protagonist of the architecture is transformed into a "stratified" courtyard, divided into three layers, useful for the gradual transition from public to private spaces. In this way, despite being in a noisy neighborhood, the space ensures a quiet and poetic scene, reorganizing the rapport between old and new, interior and exterior
The three-storey courtyard enables all interior spaces to enjoy sunlight, and although each level is separate from the other, the spaces permeate each other. The southern part contains areas for public activities, such as dining room, kitchen, bar, warehouse, the middle one a flexible space, such as exhibition hall or guest room
In the interior spaces, built around a linear garden, transparent or translucent materials are used to create a lighter atmosphere
