Located within the Dulwich Estate and the Dulwich Wood Conservation Area, the neo-Georgian house is expanded and renovated, showcasing a carefully designed interior with the client, capable of combining relaxing colors, raw materials, and textured surfaces.
The Gruff studio has been entrusted with the renovation of the London residence Little Donyland. The original floor plan from the 1930s would allow for generously sized rooms with good proportions, but the existing layout of the ground floor, due to a disconnect between the living room and kitchen, is difficult to manage.
By moving the staircase to the central position, the layout changes completely: the hallway opens up, revealing both the magnificent oversized front door and the large first-floor window, creating an entrance suitable for the innate grandeur of this house.
In addition to the renovation of the existing house, expansions are being made. The kitchen space, originally divided into a few small dark service rooms, has now been consolidated and expanded.
A small extension is also made to the dining room, with full-height windows that offer views from both the kitchen and the dining room of the garden. A slot skylight defines the extension and offers views of the garden and the sky from the kitchen. The extension is characterized by special brown bricks specially made to create details with chamfered edges and a distinctive "woven" wall at an angle.
The similarities of the chosen bricks, both in color and texture, reference the browns and reds used in the original building, establishing the extension as a distinct piece of contemporary architecture.
