Mu Xin was a complex and inspiring figure: not only was he a celebrated artist creating landscapes and abstract paintings, he was also a skilled poet and writer. The building itself is inspired by the complexity of his work, which was profoundly influenced by his consecutive imprisonment during the Cultural Revolution in the 1970s and his exile in the West
Art museum dedicated to the artist Mu Xin. An intersection of architectural volumes made of reinforced concrete
The museum, located in the historic and scenic seaside city of Wuzhen and dedicated to the famous artist and writer Mu Xin, is designed by OLI Architects and is inspired by the complexity of the artist's work, both his paintings and his writings
His multi-layered paintings show abstract landscapes, and his writings reflect the mental expansion of the mind within real physical constraints. Taking its cue from the urban fabric of dense canals, streets, merchants, courtyards and bridges, the museum is structured as a landscape of intersecting experiences
A series of architectural volumes in coloured concrete are laid out on site in a variable section relationship with the canal and the street, inviting visitors to wander through the "landscape". The spaces created by the intersection of the volumes are constantly evolving, between the road and the waterside and in this way the visitor experiences a continuous expansion of space
