Multi-Function Hall: spatial sequences of materials and colors

The multi-function hall of the Central Academy of Fine Arts is the subject of the renovation: previously used as a history museum, it now hosts numerous activities, such as exhibitions, meetings, and performances.

A new space for education and the arts

The intervention by Archstudio involved the renovation of one of the largest single-floor halls at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, previously used as a school history museum. The project aimed to make the space suitable for modern educational needs and cultural events. As part of the celebrations for the academy's centenary in 2018, the building was converted into a multifunctional hall that hosts art exhibitions, large meetings, and performances.

The designers adopted a "space sketch" approach, using essential forms and simple materials to redefine the interiors, making them flexible and suitable for multiple functions. This philosophy guided the entire intervention, creating a space capable of meeting diverse needs with a contemporary and elegant aesthetic. The project falls under the category of renovation projects that have successfully transformed a dated environment into a dynamic meeting place for students and faculty.

Neutral Colors from Gray to Black

The restyling involved various spaces, including the lobby, the main hall, the restrooms, the backstage, and the office area. The use of a palette of neutral colors, from gray to black, marked the spatial sequence, defining the different areas based on their function. The lobby was treated as a "gray box," entirely clad in granite, with large windows that visually connect the interior and exterior.

The three revolving doors at the back of the lobby act as dividing elements, shielding the inner hall from external activities without compromising accessibility. The black steel mirrored surfaces reflect the surrounding landscape, enhancing the perception of space. Furthermore, the redefinition of the restroom area improved the functionality of the layout, while the mirrored walls in the lobby create a play of reflections that accompanies the transition from outside to inside.

Modular stage and adjustable lights

The main hall has been designed to adapt to different configurations thanks to a modular stage, which replaced the existing fixed structure. The walls integrated with white sound-absorbing panels ensure optimal acoustics, while some foldable elements on the walls allow for visual continuity between the exhibition spaces. The lighting, air conditioning system, and fire protection systems have been incorporated into the aluminum grid ceiling, with a system of adjustable lights that adapts to different needs.

In exhibition mode, the light tracks can be lowered to selectively illuminate the artworks, while during events and performances, the light can be modulated to create specific atmospheres. The backstage area, in addition to accommodating movable furniture, includes a VIP lounge that reflects the design of the folding surfaces. The entire project stands out for its formal purity, where every technical element has been concealed to maintain an essential aesthetic, allowing the activities of the academy to emerge as the protagonists of the space.
