The project of the new primary school in Sissa, in the province of Parma, completed in 2023, is the result of the winning project of the first prize of the National Ideas Competition of the Ministry of Education in 2017 for the creation of Innovative Schools

A highly efficient building

Authors of various architectural projects, architects Lucio Serpagli and Alessandro Gattara from the AAA office studio, design the new primary school in Sissa, dedicated to Guglielmo Marconi, in a first version that wins the national competition and materializes in an executive project with the modifications required by the tender. A school that breaks with tradition and connects with the landscape

The new primary school in Sissa is located on a plot of about 16,000 square meters adjacent to the nursery school. It is designed to accommodate up to 250 students with 10 classrooms and 6 laboratories; 4 of these can be further divided into 10 spaces. A cafeteria for 90 people and a gymnasium of type B1, which can also be used by the community outside the school with its 700 square meters, complete the building

Near Zero Energy Building Nzeb

The architects, who designed a X-Lam wooden structure for the school with Near Zero Energy Building Nzeb standards, modified the facade and part of the roof design, improving the initial version. Thus, thermal insulation, hygroscopic characteristics, passive acoustic insulation, both natural and artificial light, and the tactile and color qualities of the materials are enhanced. This school does not follow the tradition of Italian school buildings but instead brings innovation even with the choice of colors and materials, creating architecture with simple volumes and essential design

Changes to the first project: acoustic comfort, visual well-being, green facades

The entrance was originally designed as a double volume but in the final project it becomes single for improved acoustic comfort and lower energy demand for winter air conditioning. To enhance the visual well-being of students and teachers, the glass surfaces of classrooms and laboratories have been enlarged with a vertical ribbon solution. The ground floor classrooms also have a direct exit to the garden to facilitate the use of outdoor areas for educational activities. Finally, the east and west facades are equipped with steel structures to create green screens with climbing plants. The outdoor project includes a 200 sqm courtyard adjacent to the cafeteria and a garden that evokes the surrounding landscape with its paved paths, fields, rows of trees, avenues, and vineyards
