How do children perceive space? Starting point for a school expansion
Salas Arquitectura + Diseno studio started its project to expand an existing center in Cariñena, Spain, with classrooms, playgrounds, cafeteria and offices by analyzing how children perceive space and how they move within it
The interior spaces were designed according to specific parameters and are reflected in the exterior form. The classrooms that are trapezoidal modules were designed as lounge spaces and as static spaces. They are covered with a sloping roof, and diffused sunlight fills the interiors. The playground, on the other hand is designed as a dynamic space, and is presented as a changing space
The hallway has large openings, ensuring that children have a visual connection to the outdoors. Finally, the cafeteria has large horizontal windows that are at children's eye level and look out onto the elementary school courtyard. The interiors are lined with neutral materials. Acoustics and thermal comfort have been the focus of considerable attention
