Drops of paint in a public space. Customers attracted by a colourful corridor

The architecture studio 100architects intervenes in a public space in Shanghai, China, created as a visual link between the main square and a new sales space, colouring it with drops and arches of paint that reach the floor

Paint Drop, as the project is called, is a creative intervention in a public space that highlights the new space and attracts customers who are lured through a colourful corridor in the adjacent shopping area

The reference commercial area covers 250,000 square metres with a shopping centre of 110,000 square metres and is one of the most welcoming commercial areas in Shanghai, thanks to its outdoor shopping street. The new urban space was intended to attract the attention of pedestrians and draw them into the desired area, to be at the same time attractive, permeable and of course, pedestrian-friendly

In order to meet all requirements, 100architects architectural studio's proposal, a tunnel with splashes of coloured paint seemed ideal. The presence of 8 interconnected catenary arches spread along the path, which looked like paint falling on the floor from above. As the paint arches reach the floor, a splash of colour appears leaving a trace in the form of seats and rest areas, accompanied by graphics on the floor that amplify the visual experience

The 8 arches of the coloured tunnel are also equipped with an interactive lighting system. Motion sensors are positioned at the base of the arches, capable of activating LED strips of light incorporated in the arches every time a person passes by. During the summer, this place and its vortex of colour has become one of the hotspots of the open-air shopping street, bringing together children and adults and increasing pedestrian circulation at the desired point
