Photographer's Loft: New York photographer in search of her space

Desai Chia Architecture renovates a New York loft for a photographer in search of a stimulating work environment. A space that would serve both as a gallery for her photographs and as a living space where she could enjoy her privacy.

Artist's loft between private and recreational areas

Right outside the entrance vestibule is a welcoming space, designed as a multifunctional environment that includes a library and serves as a meeting point for the owner and other gallery owners. This space not only welcomes guests but also acts as a link between the various functional areas of the residence: to the east is the private area of the loft, where the bedroom is located, while to the south opens up the recreational part, with the kitchen, dining room, and living room. The project, curated by the Desai Chia Architecture studio, is a refined example of house renovation that enhances the flexibility of spaces and organizes them in a fluid and harmonious way, respecting the artistic vocation of the residence and the owner's needs.

Art-inspired lighting by James Turrell

The lighting strategies adopted in the project are inspired by the work of James Turrell and play a fundamental role in enhancing the architecture. The cuts and folds in the ceiling have been designed to guide and modulate natural light, allowing it to gently bounce around the spaces. This technique allows for surprising lighting effects even in rooms without windows, which still appear bright and airy. Light thus becomes an integral part of the architectural language, capable of creating atmosphere and defining volumes, in a perfect balance between art and function.

Oak as the guiding thread of the project

A key element that connects all the environments is the new oak floor, chosen not only for its material elegance, but also for its ability to visually unify the spaces. The same oak planks have been used to cover some walls and integrate custom-made furniture, contributing to creating a sense of continuity and warmth. The material palette is enriched by elements in raw steel, satin aluminum, solid oak, and white resin, which together build a coherent, essential, and sophisticated aesthetic language. Each formal and material choice reflects a careful research aimed at making the space welcoming and functional at the same time.

Bathrooms as sensory refuges, between material and well-being

Bathrooms represent a sort of sensory refuge, designed as a break from the intensity and dynamism of urban life. The light and striated stone surfaces provide a sense of calm and naturalness, while the custom-designed resin sinks offer a touch of personalization. The visual continuity is further accentuated by the resin that also covers the walls and incorporates niches and the shower, eliminating any interruption between surfaces and furnishings. The intervention in the bathrooms perfectly reflects the design approach of the entire house: a balance between contemporary aesthetics and sensory well-being, where every detail is designed to promote an intimate and relaxed living experience.
