Renewal of the century-old Ossel farm. Reversal of interior and exterior

The intervention concerns the expansion and complete renovation of the farmhouse Ossel, a centuries-old farm on the outskirts of Brussels. Respecting the existing building, its openings, and historical details, the appearance of the new residence is characterized by a play of exchanges between interior and exterior and by the design of the additional volume in dark wood

Living room transformed into a patio. The inside becomes the outside

The Belgian studio Objekt Architecten is commissioned to the renovation of the house, a project completed in 2024. The farmhouse, located on a large plot of land, undergoes a complete renovation: while preserving its original openings and the characteristic fireplace, the living room is transformed into a patio. The new structure, built adjacent to the rear of the farmhouse, features large windows and walls finished in dark wood both inside and outside

Embrace of the contemporary with the ancient highlighting the tension between epochs

The spaces of the new volume, designed as steps, follow one another without clear closures, running around the old building at a different angle. An embrace of the contemporary with the ancient that highlights the tension between epochs. At the corner between the two arms of the extension, two home offices and a meeting room with independent access are arranged, allowing to keep separate areas for work and private life. The short arm accommodates two covered parking spaces and a service storage room

The internal distribution of Ossel

The day area of the farmhouse is developed between the old building and the new volume: in the first one, the kitchen adjacent to the patio-living room which opens completely with large windows; in the second one, the dining room, the living room, the relaxation area, and the large bathroom of the master suite that extends from the sleeping area. A covered outdoor living area, overlooking the garden, completes the living area. To reach the sleeping area, you have to go back into the old building: on the ground floor, the master bedroom with a large separate space for wardrobes and another patio carved into the ancient structure; on the upper floor, three bedrooms with a bathroom and laundry room

The character of the old farmhouse hybridized with the contemporary

The roof of the old farmhouse has been renovated along with the dormer windows, the glass walls on the east and west sides have allowed for an increase in natural light in the house. In the garden at the front of the house, a bocce court has been created; the volume of the pool at the back complements the view towards the upper garden. Ossel has preserved the character of the old farmhouse, hybridizing it with the contemporary in a final effect that is unprecedented for a living space that surprises in every area
