The rationality of the curved line: a tribute to neoclassical aesthetics

In a 1930s rationalist building, a pied-à-terre in Milan evolves into an art and design residence: arches and curves dominate the scene, along with marble and wood. Fluid spaces combine elegance and functionality, among ancient statues and contemporary furnishings, in a neoclassical dance

From occasional pied-à-terre to habitual residence

Icona Architetti, author of numerous architecture projects, focuses on Via Eustachi in Milan: the third floor of a rationalist building, originally conceived as an occasional pied-à-terre, is transformed into a residence meant to be lived in habitually. "The rationality of the curved line" is the name chosen for the project: the creative use of the curved line, a tribute to neoclassical aesthetics and the rational use of the arch, along with the minimalism of material choice, wood and marble, guide the entire intervention.

The remodeling of the plant starts from the corridor

The restructuring focused mainly on the deconstruction of the original plant, characterized by a bulky linear corridor. In addition to adding a new room with double access at the entrance, usable as a coat rack on one side of the entrance and as a wardrobe on the opposite side, the corridor is remodeled and divided into two independent parts, becoming a sort of linear art gallery hosting artworks and elegant design pieces.

Archways of light: the call of the living room

From the narrow living room, decorated with a Dedar wallpaper featuring a geometric pattern, the visitor is almost sucked into the bright open space. Two iconic arched openings clad in wood, a reinterpretation of the existing openings, dominate the living area: the concept of a door is replaced by that of a passage, a symbol of continuity. Bypassing the interruption of the hallway at the entrance, the open space connects to the bedroom and the rest of the house.

Furnishing in harmony with the renovation theme

The living room is characterized by carefully chosen furnishings by the designers, in harmony with the curved theme of the renovation: the slender and refined Rimadesio metal bookcase, the Minotti sofa with a half-moon backrest, complemented by a half-circle pouf, the Moon rug shaped like a planet, the sinuous armchair and Cassina coffee tables. For the wall, a dark canvas by artist Lorenzo Puglisi was chosen.

The marble veins characterize the dining room and kitchen

The dining room and kitchen form a single space characterized by a precise and harmonious perspective balance. The dining table, custom-made in Covelano Fantastico marble, stands out for its arched C-shaped legs and monolithic top, which recalls in vein and size the slab used in the kitchen backsplash. From the central point, the perspective lines create a theatrical symmetry, while above the table stands the majestic Sarfatti chandelier. The residence is completed with a minimalist master bedroom and an en suite bathroom, enriched with the same refined finishes as the kitchen, featuring wood, marble, and golden brass fixtures.

Sinuous shapes characterize the bathroom

The guest bathroom stands out for a strong contrast, where the whiteness of the marbles harmoniously interacts with the green ceramic decorations, custom-made and depicting a sequence of arches. This curvilinear motif is not limited to the walls but is elegantly reflected in the custom-made vanity, the sinuous-shaped sink, the rounded mirror, and the bathtub. To complete the environment, in one corner, stands a marble bust that adds an aristocratic and refined touch, giving a touch of class to the setting.
