Rianxo: new port facilities inspired by the natural environment

In the port of Rianxo, in Galicia, the requalification has transformed old warehouses into modern structures, integrating sustainability and design. The project to replace the port warehouses has created a functional and contemporary space, maintaining harmony with the landscape and promoting an optimal working environment for the fishing sector. The port now hosts two new buildings that, thanks to innovative design, enhance the needs of the maritime environment and integration with the city.

Functionality and innovation: a port in step with the times

The new warehouses arise as a concrete response to the modern needs of those working in the port sector, with cutting-edge design. The old buildings have been replaced by two modern warehouses, each with 24 well-designed compartments, for a total of 44 units. Each space is equipped with a toilet, offering comfort and functionality to those who work in the port every day.

The commitment to design, curated by Santos y Mera arquitectos, goes beyond practicality: each structure has a continuous cladding that connects the east facade to the west, creating an organic image reminiscent of sea waves and estuary flow. The continuous skin of the buildings not only provides a natural appearance but also serves a practical role as a visor to protect from rain, sun, and wind.

An architecture that interacts with the environment

At the heart of the project is the desire to create an architecture that does not impose itself on the environment, but rather integrates with it. The layout of the warehouses has been designed not to disrupt the view of the estuary and the surrounding roads. Through thoughtful placement, the buildings maintain visual continuity and naturally adapt to the urban context, avoiding visual barriers and creating a harmonious flow with the surrounding area.

The project has chosen strong yet simple lines and proportions that reflect a vision of sustainable architecture, concrete and respectful of the environment. The organic shape of the buildings breaks away from the typical industrial aesthetics of such structures, instead introducing a stylistic coherence that evokes the movement of the waves and the natural atmosphere of the port.

Structure and sustainability: a commitment to the environment

The construction of these buildings has been carried out with simplicity and precision. The structure made of prefabricated concrete is securely connected to the foundations, while the facades and roofs are made of lightweight materials, such as wood and metal, shaping the buildings and enhancing their sustainability. All materials used are nationally or European certified, with a focus on reducing environmental impact and future recycling, adopting a dry assembly system to facilitate deconstruction.

A project in line with sustainable development goals

These new warehouses are among the sustainable architecture projects, an example of social and environmental sustainability, contributing to various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The project of the Rianxo port is a significant example of how architecture can respond innovatively and respectfully to functional and environmental needs. With an aesthetic that recalls the marine environment and a conscious approach to sustainability, the port has transformed into a modern, functional space integrated into the urban context. Rianxo now has structures that not only meet the daily needs of port operators but also represent a commitment to a more sustainable future, both for the community and the natural environment surrounding it.
