Exploring the idea of retreating to intimacy in one's own home despite living in an urban space, Stepping Stone House was designed by Craig Tan Architects as an environment capable of increasing social interaction and deeper engagement with natural elements
A choreography of structures narrates the Stepping Stone House
A deceptively large house seeks to increase its users' awareness of the environment: a series of cantilevered volumes and circular windows frame the outdoor spaces like magnifying glasses for an engaging interaction with nature
The brief for the project was to create a single north-facing space at the front of the property. The plan of the house is deep and narrow, but the distribution of space and precise architectural devices allow the space to feel much larger than it really is
The pavilions and spaces in between are framed by circular windows that are like magnifying glasses for nature, creating intimacy and more opportunities for interaction with the outside world. Extending upwards, on the second floor, the pavilions turn into a long linear volume housing the sleeping area
The upper level is articulated as an elegant cantilevered beam. Following the diurnal path of the sun during the day, the light wells of the double-height courtyards become a constantly animated orchestra of light and shadow, connecting the occupants with the cycles of nature
