Winter House: dancing volumes in untouched nature

Texture, volumes, fissures, spans that narrow or extend space according to needs: this is how the Winter House by LAAR in Yucatan presents itself, with spans of blocks emphasizing volumes that seem to dance next to each other.

Living in a shelter in untouched nature

The goal of the architects from the LAAR studio was to build a single housing unit that would serve as both a shelter and a place to admire and live in untouched nature. This project stands out among the most interesting architectural projects, thanks to a design that involves dividing the house into four distinct blocks, thus promoting greater permeability between interior and exterior.

Authentic material language: stone and wood

From the moment you enter the access avenue, an authentic material language emerges, expressing the sincerity of the construction elements, including stone and wood, materials chosen for their durability and natural integration with the surrounding environment. The stone, with its irregular texture and earthy color, harmoniously interacts with the wood, adding warmth and authenticity to the spaces.

The space is structured around a north-south axis, which serves as the backbone of the residence. This axis becomes not only a distributive element but also a visual and functional guiding thread, ideally connecting the entrance with the more open areas of the residence. Following this path, you reach the green oasis of the Country Club, an area of great landscape value that gives the project a strong connection to nature and the local context.

Golf course extension

Towards the golf course, architecture is expressed through a play of differentiated volumes, characterized by flared bays that reduce the visual weight of the structures. This design choice allows the house to maintain an elegant and light profile, without compromising the solidity and functionality of the construction. The flared bays act as transitional elements between interior and exterior, providing shading and improving the thermal comfort of the indoor spaces.

The overall effect is that of an architecture that appears to float in the landscape, seamlessly integrating with the surrounding greenery. This approach creates architectural patterns that allow for a broad management of permeability and flexibility of the spaces. Sliding walls and large glass surfaces enhance the connection with the outdoors, allowing, if needed, the entire house to be transformed into a natural extension of the golf course.

Distribution and functionality of spaces

The layout of the residence is organized into two main areas:

  • Social area: includes the living room, dining room, bar, office, kitchen, pool, and terrace, promoting moments of conviviality and relaxation.

  • Private area: houses four bedrooms and their facilities, ensuring a perfect balance between privacy and openness to the outside.

Each space is designed to offer maximum comfort, always maintaining a constant connection with the surrounding nature.
