Temporary pavilion for a festival. Permeable space with different functions

For the Walk&Talk festival, Mezzo Atelier studio has created a temporary wooden pavilion, an alternative space where different festival dynamics take place, from conferences to shows and concerts, from workshops to simple meeting points

On the occasion of the Walk&Talk 2018 festival, the central space of the festival becomes a temporary pavilion. The pavilion has set the occupancy of public spaces as the centre of the Walk&Talk programme, offering an alternative space as a stage for various festival dynamics: conferences, shows and concerts, which took place between 29 and 14 July

The Pavilion presents itself as a public space, a meeting point and a space dedicated to the presentation of projects, workshops, reception of the festival production team. The design project of the pavilion is carried out by the architects of Mezzo Atelier. The space is completely permeable, it offers a ceiling and the right protection for the different functions that are performed

The modular wooden structure was developed from the idea of building a large, flexible, home-shaped structure. The weight of the double-pitched roof is supported by a parallel system of pillars: a sequence of interconnected portals, which resembles the structure of churches with a superior nave

Envisioning the pavilion as a temporary home in an open public space could be read as a manifesto of the ideals that the Festival wanted to convey, the appropriation and revival of public space and interaction with the population were the main themes of the project, with the pavilion as the central point of a program that revolves around it

The modular structure makes it easy to modify the dimensions of the pavilion, to change the spaces. The structure, entirely constructed using local certified wood, cryptomeria, a Japanese cedar introduced in the islands many years ago. Although it is a soft wood, it goes well with the type of climate present in the Azores which is humid and rainy, because, being very porous, it "breathes" and dries quickly
