Sculptural volume that interacts with the landscape
On a sloping terrain in the east area of Toronto, this four-bedroom single-family home is nestled in a ravine, with steep slopes rising in the backyard and on the opposite side of the street. The Canadian firm Reigo & Bauer designed this new construction by employing geometric solutions to maximize the narrow lot space and create a visually striking structure.
The building rises in height, emphasizing verticality in continuity with the ancient trees that tower along the surrounding hills. The exterior is clad almost entirely in diamond-shaped gray tiles, extending from the walls to the garage door and roof, giving the architecture a cohesive and monolithic appearance.
On the south side, a portion of the volume has been excavated, creating space for steps leading to the entrance door and additional windows, placed within the facade recesses. These openings are oriented to avoid direct views onto the neighboring property, ensuring privacy and, at the same time, allowing more natural light into the heart of the house, in compliance with urban planning regulations.
