Detected shock absorbers for the Garda cycle path: safety and innovation

The expanded clay Leca has been used to fill the rockfall galleries along the Trentino section of the Garda cycle path. An innovative solution for safety and sustainability that will allow the construction of a work that will cover over 165 km crossing Trentino, Lombardy, and Veneto.

A unique cycling project in Europe

The Garda cycle path is an extraordinary work that, once completed, will cover over 165 km crossing Trentino, Lombardy, and Veneto. The first section was inaugurated in Limone sul Garda in 2018, offering a suspended path with spectacular views of the lake. The project involves an investment of around one hundred million euros, with the aim of creating the longest cycle path in Europe.

Cycle path structure and layout

The route winds through cliffs, glass walkways, and sections suspended on metal structures. It includes small bridges, tunnels, and crossings on existing walls, adapting to the terrain's conformation. In the Trentino section, for design and logistical needs, the cycle path passes inside the mountain, utilizing rockfall galleries to ensure safety and protection.

Leca: an effective solution for safety

In the Trentino area, Laterlite provided expanded clay Leca for filling the rockfall galleries. This material was chosen for its lightweight and strength, which allow it to absorb the kinetic energy of any falling rocks. Its unique structure makes it an excellent shock absorber, reducing risks for cyclists using the track.

Sustainability and durability of the material

Expanded clay Leca is a durable material, resistant to weather and chemicals, that does not degrade over time. It does not absorb water, does not break in freezing conditions, and ensures consistent performance. The choice of this material reflects the intention to create a safe and environmentally friendly infrastructure, perfectly integrated into the landscape of Lake Garda.
