Camplus: student and social housing in the former Olympic Village of Turin

A modern and accessible housing offer is that of Camplus, the new student and social housing in the former Olympic Village of Turin, which is driving the broader transformation of the area

From former General Markets to former Olympic Village

The area in Turin adjacent to the arcades designed by Umberto Cuzzi in 1932 has a history of transformations: from General Markets until 2001, to Olympic Village for the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics on a masterplan by Otto Steidle and coordination by Benedetto Camerana, to its latest use as student and social housing, after a period of illegal occupation. The new Camplus, which is the redevelopment of 7 out of the 39 buildings, was completed in 2022 under the project by the PICCO Architetti studio and the construction management by Studio Pession

A new flexible residential model

Starting from the original architectural projects by Steilde for the Olympic Village, the Camplus project proposes a new flexible residential model. The German architect had designed an open settlement matrix, in a checkerboard pattern, which contrasted with the typical closed block layout of the city. Among the various buildings, green spaces and pedestrian paths intertwined, and still do today. Six of the seven buildings that make up the new Camplus, the B2, D0, D2, F0, F2 with rectangular floor plans, and the largest E4 with an L-shaped layout, originally designed by Steidle, now house apartments on all floors: from studios to 4-bedrooms. The seventh building, the E1, originally built according to the design of the Austrian architect Adolf Krischanitz, has been reorganized today into 27 studios and 14 two-room apartments

The recovery of the buildings

The restoration, conservative recovery, and functional recovery of the 7 buildings, carried out by the company CO.GE.DA spa of Turin, took place in two phases. The first phase of strip out involved the demolition of all internal partitions and the removal of all mechanical and electrical systems. In the second phase, with 14 months of work, all construction and plant engineering works were carried out, returning part of the former Olympic Village complex to the city in its formal identity, brought to light also through the restoration of the original colors designed by the artist Erich Wiesner, but renewed in content

Camplus as a driving force for a broader transformation

In addition to the rearrangement of outdoor areas, the operation resulted in a flexible residence, composed of accommodations of various sizes, equipped with a reception and checkpoint. These services are located together with offices, a gym, common socializing areas, and a dining area in the building overlooking Via Giordano Bruno. Camplus offers modern and affordable housing, acting as a driving force for the broader transformation of the area where the Health, Research, and Innovation Park and the restoration of the arches of the former market are planned to be located
