In the small village of Moso, in the heart of the Sesto Dolomites in South Tyrol (Italy), the old restaurant is being converted into the Biwak 12, following the imprint of the place where everything is themed "mountain": inspired by the red bivouac of the nearby Cima 12, the new meeting place for the community takes shape

Conversion of a typical mountain restaurant

The bivouac is a high mountain shelter equipped with the bare essentials for staying overnight. The red one that stands out against the local mountain panorama, at the foot of the Croda dei Toni/Cima 12, inspires PLASMA studio in the conversion of a typical 1980s mountain restaurant located in Moso for which they are commissioned. Borrowing typical elements of the bivouac, the concept translates them into the new spatial characteristics of Biwak 12

Brick red and rough surfaces

The restaurant is being renovated both in its interiors and in its external image, with a continuous allusion to the microcosm of the bivouac. Its color brick red is reproduced in the tone of the counter, the seating, the tables, and the lamps, as well as in some walls and part of the recovered vault. The tactile experience of rough and bare materials is recreated by inserting colored sheets and plywood panels left rough. The graphics refer to the world of mountaineering and some details, such as the original Tyrolean stube, maintain the connection with historical tradition

Upcycling and reuse

Following the highly popular theme in interior design projects of upcycling, in Biwak 12 the spaces are reorganized and the color scheme is reworked focusing on the reuse of materials. The vaulted ceiling, previously hidden by the wooden false ceiling, is reclaimed and transformed into a defining element of the new restaurant. Between the dynamic bar area and the more intimate dining area, a room recreates the experience of a bivouac: a red niche with walls, lamps, and folding tables complete with climbing carabiners. The high-altitude bivouac comes to life in Biwak 12

Dialogue with the existing

Through a few targeted interventions that characterize this expansion of the old existing building, even the external appearance of the premises is completely renewed, placing itself in a lively but open interaction with the context. In this regard, the terrace that adjoins the restaurant volume is also made available to the public with the aim of establishing a new point of reference and revitalization for the town
